Mojito
Fresh mint, fruity lime juice and sparkling soda – these are the ingredients that make the Mojito a refreshing summer drink. By adding light Cuban rum, cane sugar and of course crushed ice this culinary highlight becomes one of the most popular cocktails that cannot be missed at any party.
Precursors of today’s Mojito already existed in the 16th century
The origin of the Mojito cocktail is the island Cuba and like most cocktails, there are a lot of stories about the creation of the Mojito. One legend says that the British pirate Francis Drake already used a mix of limes, sugar, cane sugar schnapps and mint to soothe his stomach troubles. The Spain, who lived in fear of Drake, gave him the nickname “El Draque”, in English “the dragon” and therefore also started calling his drink the same. This first precursor of the Mojito later was mixed with white rum, when the production of rum became popular in the Caribbean.
The Mojito becomes world-famous through Ernest Hemingway
But it wasn’t until much later that the cocktail was known under the name Mojito. According to cultural historians the word Mojito was printed for the first time in 1910. At the time the drink was served at the Bar La Concha in the Cuban capital of Havana. Later the cocktail was made famous by the renowned literature Nobel prize winner Ernest Hemmingway. He used to order his favourite Mojito in the bar La Bodeguita del Medio in Havana. His famous quote “My Mojito in La Bodeguita, my Daiquiri in El Floridita” can still be read above the counter there today.
The Mojito as a contemporary classic of the International Bartenders Association
The Mojito’s popularity and fame also made him one of the contemporary classics of the International Bartenders Association. According to the IBA the original recipe of the Mojito consists of 4cl white Cuban rum, 3cl fresh lime juice, 6 mint leaves, 2 tea spoons of white cane sugar und a sip of soda. First the mint leaves, the white cane sugar and the lime juice are mixed in a glass and stirred. Than a splash of soda and cracked ice are added to the mix. After that the white rum and the rest of the soda are poured into the glass. The drink is traditionally decorated with a twig of mint and a slice of lime are used and served with a straw.
